Manchester City sign Bony from Swansea city
The Ivory Coast international has completed a £27 million move to the Etihad Stadium as Manuel Pellegrini boosts his striking options in a bid to retain the Premier LeagueManchester City have completed the signing of striker Wilfried Bony from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee.
As revealed by Goal earlier this week, the Premier League champions finally reached an agreement with the Welsh side over a £27 million fee on Saturday evening, and the Ivory Coast international has now penned terms on a £75,000-a-week contract.
Injury to topscorer Sergio Aguero, coupled with the lack of form and fitness of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, forced Manuel Pellegrini to field James Milner up front recently but City have moved quickly to secure a player they hope can boost their strike force in the race for the Premier League title.
Bony, who could be unavailable until mid-February if Ivory Coast reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, was the Premier League's topscorer in 2014 with 20 goals, meaning City now have the three leading scorers of the past year on their books (Bony, Aguero, Yaya Toure).
The 26-year-old's base salary of £75,000 is believed to be roughly what Matija Nastasic earned, with the Serbian defender moving to Schalke on loan earlier in the window as City look to balance their books with Financial Fair Play in mind.
"Wilfried could well be the difference in the title race, that's what City see in him," said Swansea boss Garry Monk of his former charge, who scored 34 goals in 70 appearances in all competitions since joining from Vitesse - who are due to receive 10 per cent of the transfer fee.
"I can see why their interest is there, he gets you goals. He can improve on certain things but the bottom line is he is a goalscorer and it's obviously what they want him for."
